Learning Support & Enrichment

Learning Support staff work alongside classroom teachers with their joint endeavor being to provide the best teaching and learning practice for all students.

Our whole-school focus is based upon a systematic approach to planning curriculum and instruction for academically-diverse learners.

Students are prepared for a smooth transition from primary to secondary school via liaison with primary school teachers, parents and external professionals where appropriate.

Similarly, after appropriate consultation, students’ needs are considered at each year level transition and appropriate pathways are developed. Post-school options are also carefully considered.

Learning is supported within the mainstream classroom in a flexible and proactive manner, appropriate to a range of individual needs, providing resources, one-to-one support and curriculum differentiation.

Star’s Learning Support Policy encourages the development of an inclusive culture in which all students can be catered for according to their needs and potential.

Briefings, support group meetings and case discussions are convened with parents, relevant teaching staff and professionals from other agencies to plan, review and evaluate appropriate educational programs tailored to the needs of our students.

All faculties provide programs which offer opportunities for enrichment and extension of highly able or gifted students.

English teachers from the Learning Support Faculty provide opportunities for students in Years 7 to 9 who are gifted or highly able, to explore literature and ideas of greater depth and complexity with a group of like-minded students. 

Small group extension classes explore texts as diverse as The Odyssey, Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Bronte’s Jane Eyre, Anne Tyler’s The Accidental Tourist and poetry by John Keats, John Donne and William Shakespeare. 

Students are encouraged to produce their own texts, explore their creativity and refine their editing skills through their participation in various writing activities. 

The Faculty also facilitates philosophical discussions with highly-able students from Years 8 to 11 who show a keen interest in philosophical inquiry. A team of students is entered into the Philosothon, an inter-school competition, each year.

The Learning Support team strives to provide a climate of encouragement and trust which is supportive of staff and students and provides opportunities to develop greater teaching and learning effectiveness.
